Nicoll Highway Accident: Tree Blocks Multiple Lanes, Disrupts Traffic in Singapore

In an unexpected turn of events on Thursday, a section of Nicoll Highway in Singapore was abruptly closed after a tree fell across three lanes near the junction with Java Road. The incident has led to a series of closures and diversions, causing disruptions to both road traffic and public transportation services in the area.

Nicoll Highway Closure: Tree Blocks Multiple Lanes

Singaporeans were met with a major road closure on Thursday evening as a tree fell across Nicoll Highway, blocking three lanes near the junction with Java Road. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) swiftly responded, notifying the public via social media platforms about the obstacle on Nicoll Highway towards Guillemard Road.

In a 6:45 pm post on X (formerly known as Twitter), LTA alerted commuters about the incident, stating that Nicoll Highway was closed after Java Road. A subsequent post at 7:11 pm revealed that the closure was a result of an “accident” on the same stretch of the road. The situation led to a further extension of the closure until after Middle Road, as confirmed by LTA at 7:41 pm.

Traffic Disruptions and Diverted Bus Services

As a consequence of the tree-induced road closure, footage shared on TikTok depicted traffic at a standstill, with tree branches obstructing one side of Nicoll Highway. Notably, traffic in the opposite direction appeared to be moving without hindrance.

Public transportation services were not spared from the disruptions, with SBS Transit announcing diversions for several bus services in the affected area. Bus services 10, 10e, 14, 14e, 16, 70/70M, 196, and 196e were redirected away from Nicoll Highway towards Guillemard Road, with three bus stops (80151, 80161, and 80211) being skipped due to the fallen tree.

Impact on Taylor Swift’s Concerts

Nicoll Highway, a major route leading to the National Stadium, faced closures and diversions during the Singapore leg of pop sensation Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts. The disruptions occurred just as Swift resumed her shows on Thursday after a two-day break, with her sixth and final performance scheduled for Saturday.

The Nicoll Highway incident has prompted significant disruptions to both road and public transportation in the affected area. As authorities work to clear the fallen tree and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, commuters are advised to stay updated on road conditions and possible diversions. CNA has been contacted for additional information, and further updates will be provided as the situation unfolds.
